Fly Tying Inspiration
« on: December 11, 2014, 02:46:15 PM »

I decided to make a new sticky thread because I was abusing the other one. The other thread is WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN tying... pictures of your flies.

I wanted to make a thread of flies that I actually plan on tying one day.  or am Inspired to tie by other people

Came across these online. I thought they looked doable.

Bumble Bee Fly

and Crankbait Fly.

I was thinking of that crankbait fly the other day after you showed it to me at the bar...that damn thing would work great as i'm drifting along in the kayak.  I could keep a tighter line to give it a little more action.  I'm officially putting it on my list too :lol  At least the lip concept part, i'd probably change the body to something even simpler.

I really think you can put one of those together. I will tell you right now that Golden crest feather sucks to work with. It takes a lot for me to get them to sit in the exact way I you want them. You have to crush the stem of the feather just perfect to get them to sit in align with the hook, etc. etc. wicked Pain in the ass.

a lot of rangeley patterns call for it in the underbelly/underwing as well...so i've been trying it out.

i'll be honest...setting tippets for an underwing aint easy either :lol

smooth floss aint easy, smooth tinsel aint easy...marrying single slips aint easy :lol  I can handle the tag though, I got that shit down :lol

I had sent that Bumble bee fly via text messages to some friends and stated that it would look pretty cool in all black as a big horsefly...

Apparently the fly tyer on instagram though the same thing. The guy's name is Petterew that had tied these up.

Looks fairly simple. dubbed body, wonder wings, CDC palmered leggs, and foam folded over.

somebody outbid me :lol friggin ebay...anywho, I found some 8/0 (big boys) Adlington and Hutchinson hooks...that the seller bought 30 years ago in Scotland, and the shop he bought them in, the owner said the hooks had been there for over 50 years.

Partridge remakes these hooks, but these are original, hand filed shanks, points, etc...pretty neat

80 year old hooks :lol  Seriously, I have issues.  They are more Dee than Spey hooks, so i might do a Dee pattern like the Balmoral or something like that.
