Heddon #19 Riptide Fly Rod
« on: September 01, 2017, 07:04:39 PM »

I needed another rod like well you know....

Stopped by a antique dealer recently and he had a fine specimen of Heddon's venture into specialized salt water Bamboo fly rods called the 'Riptide'. These were made from approximately 1946-54. I read somewhere they only used their finest bamboo and it was heat treated. This one does state 'tempered' on the sock. Everything is there and in excellent shape. Rod, two tips, extension butt, sock and tube. Even has the original inspectors initials on the sock tag.

One of the things that convinced me to buy it was how well the vintage striper reel fits in the reel seat and how well it casts. It can even be two handed which I like a lot. The reel balances it quite well but at nine feet in bamboo it is a slight bit heavy on the tip. Works very well with an 8wt line.

It won't see a lot of use but it will get some striper slime on it under my ownership.
