foam :lol

Specifically a small slice of a foam cylinder between the tail and the first stack of deer hair.  it would just add a little extra flotation.

I had a piece of foam tied in on the bottom with this fly, that I was going to pull forward and glue down to the underside of the fly.  But I cut it out, as I figured it would just make the fly want to flip over.

I can make these work with a standard hook, riding bend/point down.  But I really really want to keep trying to use this jig style hook with the point/bend riding up.  Just want to be able to swim it through submerged weeds, pads...I also think standing up in the kayak is going to help this too, as the rod angle will be much better.

:lol

I like your approach to fly tying these beast flies. I have to admit, sometimes if I create a fly and it doesn't work, I tend to just chuck in the trash and never return to it :lol

Tonight I'm going to tie up at least one spoon fly.

I tie at least one fly a night...just something I do.

On the mouse fly...I was stacking the deer hair on the bottom, and creating a big collar each time on the top to get all the fluff.  I don't want it to just skate on the surface I wanted it to really bulger/wake a lot of water.  In the past I've used too heavy of a jig hook, and eventually it just sank.  Also, my deer hair skill have improved (marginally) since my last attempt, so I do feel I packed more on the shank then I ever have before.

It just sucks with this type of fly, if its a bust, its a bust...it has to stay upright, or else its just stupid, and a waste of materials :lol

Big streamers, almost always work on still water...might not have the greatest action, but they should work.

HEre is that "mostly" all bou fly...head is a small bit of blended red and orange bucktail...supports the final veil of rusty orange laser dub.  tiny bit of epoxy over the head and eyes.  Looks messy, but should produce.  Thinking smallies in the fall too...they can't lay off yellow things for some reason :lol

That's just awesome man. I really really like the look of that fly.

Yellow for Smallies? Good to know.

My go to color for Spring Smallies ESPECIALLY in the Quabbin has been purple.

Perch colors, perhaps? Those are some sweet ties, Matt!

A fly a day... Therapy.   :)

I just think to my gear chucking days :lol  Best jerkbait was a "perch" colored luck craft, but its really just almost all yellow...frog colored spook, but the belly of the bait is all yellow, a couple yellow swimbaits I used...

that said, perch on the cape, are nearly always dark green...very little yellow :lol  Although I think I read somewhere, that bass have a tendency to be able to see yellow the best out of all the colors.  Who knows!

Fly a day is definite therapy!

Almost as heavy?  Have you tried and make an epoxy lip for that thing?

you'd be surprised...it rather light considering.

there is only one section of reverse tied bucktail on the rear hook, middle shank, and front hook.  The other material is call "poly bear" its the green stuff on top.  Its very water retardent, and sheds it easily on the cast.  There is a little marabou in there for some movement (like it needs it).

The front hook, the part you don't see, is the foam cylinder underneath that I shaped into a sort of pyramind, then drew back the material over it.  Then clipped (with a chip clip lol ) all the material back to round the head area over.  Coated it in 5min epoxy, and will add another coat tonight.

The front hook is what they call a 6/0 owner twist look flipping hook, which has a slightly turned up hook eye, like a jig hook, but not as extreme.  I oriented it down, so when using a sinking line, it should help pull the fly down and create a much better wake.

It will probably suck...but it was a quick tie

So if you've seen the low fat minnow pattern from the flyfishfood blog....it's neat.  But kinda tiny, and on a dinky dink hook.

Soo ...while this is small, I tied it on a gammie tarpon hook lol....cool little bluegill imitation .

Tail is two smallish grizzly scrapped hackles...some micro lateral scale flash, and a pinch of marabou.  Body is palmer chenille in tan (hard to see in the pic)...head is laser dub, yellow, sculpin olive on top and rustype orange on the bottom.  Brass barbell eyes.  Great movement for a small fly, and just a great shimmer to the materails once they get wet.
